Where to Buy a Frisbee for Ultimate
Before you start looking to buy a disc for Ultimate, there are two things you need to know. First, that official Ultimate discs (at least in the U.S.) must be 175 gram discs. Second, that the brand Discraft is the undisputed leader in Ultimate. There are other brands that sell 175 gram disc for Ultimate Frisbee (like Innova and WHAM-O), but Discraft is the best. 99% of the time, you will be playing Ultimate with a Discraft disc.
Now that you know what you are looking for, the question remains – where can you buy a disc for Ultimate? There are many places you can buy a disc for Ultimate! Check them out below.
Buying a Frisbee Online
Buying a disc online, from Discraft’s Store or Amazon, is an easy way to purchase a disc. If you have a game coming up, all you need is a few days for shipping, and you can have an Ultimate disc delivered to your door.
Buying a Youth Frisbee
You can also purchase youth discs online! Youth discs are smaller and lighter than the 175g discs. They are also more flexible. This allows younger children the ability to control where the disc goes more easily.
Buying a Frisbee at Your Local League or Tournament
If you are going to play Ultimate at a local league or tournament, chances are that they will be selling discs there! Discs usually cost between $10 and $15 dollars, and can often be purchased near the tournament headquarters. Bigger tournaments or leagues might even have custom discs for the event!
Department or Sporting Goods Store
You may be able to buy a Frisbee at your local department or sporting goods store – but be warned! There are many different types of discs for sale. Make sure the disc you find is Discraft, and 175 grams. Don’t make the mistake of buying a disc golf disc or a “backyard” disc!
Tips for Buying a Frisbee for Ultimate
Believe it or not, all discs are not made equal. Below are several tips for buying a disc for Ultimate.
Buy a Disc Made from White Plastic
I’ve found that buying a disc of white plastic works best for Ultimate Frisbee. There are a few different reasons why this is the case. First, white discs attract much less heat than a disc made of colored plastic. After playing in the sun, this makes a huge difference! White discs will still stay rigid and fly through the air better, while discs with colored plastic become more bendy, and won’t fly as far.
White discs also stand out against the green backdrop of the ground. A colored disc may not contrast as much with the grass, and be more challenging to focus on (especially for anyone who struggles with color contrasts).
Finally, in my experience, people enjoy using white discs more. Using a disc made of white plastic seems to be part of the culture of Ultimate. If you’re looking to fit in, buy a white disc (or if you’re a rebel, go with a different color)!
I mentioned this above, but there are many different brands that make discs for Ultimate Frisbee. Right now, Discraft is the standard for Ultimate Frisbee players. Believe it or not, discs made by different companies actually fly differently through the air.
99% of the time, you will be playing Ultimate with a Discraft disc. Buying a Discraft Frisbee will allow you to practice what you’ll play with. This way you can get used to the feel, and flight path, of the disc you will eventually be on the field with.
Save Money with Misprints
If you are looking to save money, I would suggest checking out Discraft’s Ultimate Misprints. Discraft makes a lot of different custom discs – and sometimes they make mistakes. Instead of throwing these discs out, Discraft offers these “mistake discs” at a huge discount. The mistakes are just superficial, and you can save a lot of money on discs by using this option.
Other Fun Frisbees to Play With
Finding the right Frisbee for Ultimate is important. But there are other fun Frisbees you can play with! Whether you are enjoying time in the backyard, on a beach, or with your friends, check out these other fun Frisbees to play with below.
Nite IZE Flashflight LED Light Up Frisbee
There are so many hours of daylight in the day. Once it gets dark, tossing the disc around becomes challenging. But, with a light up Frisbee, you can keep playing past sunset and well into the night! This Frisbee carries a small battery which powers LED lights on the disc. These are quite illuminating, making it easy to continue playing past dark.
Aerobie Pro Ring
The Aerobie Pro Ring is a larger, lightweight disc with a hollowed out center. These are easier to throw than Ultimate discs, and can stay in the air much longer. If you have friends who don’t play Frisbee that often, these are a great choice. Almost anyone can grab, throw, and catch one of these with ease. They are also a great option for kids, as the soft flexible plastic doesn’t hurt if an errant throw hits someone in the head!
If you are looking for a disc you can still play Ultimate with, but need it to be a little more personal, check out Discraft’s Custom Disc Service. You can send in an order, with an image, and they will print your personalized image on their discs at an affordable price. It’s quite fun for parties, tournaments, and teams.
Other Ultimate Frisbee Gear
Now that you have your disc, you are ready to play, right! Well, not so fast. If you are serious about playing Ultimate Frisbee, you’ll want to consider some of the other Ultimate Frisbee gear.
